I’m an Iranian-American political scientist and professor at Johns Hopkins SAIS, where I co-direct the Rethinking Iran Initiative and advise at CSIS. I write and speak widely on Iran, US-Iran relations, and the Middle East.
Born in Tehran, I left after the 1979 revolution and earned degrees from Tufts, Fletcher, and MIT. I previously served as Dean of SAIS and as a senior adviser to Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.
I’m the author of several books, including The Shia Revival, The Dispensable Nation, and Iran’s Grand Strategy.
