I'm Tom, a professor at Harvard Business School, where I hold the Howard H. Stevenson Professorship and co-chair Foundry, our AI-powered community for founders worldwide.

Before Harvard, I spent years as a McKinsey consultant. I've since taught entrepreneurship at HBS for almost three decades and written more than a hundred case studies on how startups actually work. My book, Why Startups Fail, grew out of the sight that failure follows a small number of repeatable patterns, and naming the pattern is usually more useful to a founder than another success story.
