I’m Dr. Steve Tippins: Professor Emeritus, dissertation chair, researcher, and doctoral coach with over four decades in higher education. I’ve served on more than 300 dissertation committees, chaired hundreds of defenses, published extensively, and worked one-on-one with doctoral students across disciplines to help them finish.
At my core, I’m a translator.
Doctoral education is deliberately mysterious. Students are rarely told what the process actually is, what “good enough” looks like, or how decisions are really made behind the scenes. I believe that lack of clarity isn’t accidental—it’s a power structure. My job is to pull back the curtain, explain what committees are actually asking for, and give students a clear path to completion.
I don’t believe dissertations are meant to be perfect. Some of the worst research you’ll ever do is your dissertation, because it’s the first time you’ve done it. That’s normal. The goal isn’t brilliance; the goal is competence, alignment, and completion. A finished dissertation earns you your union card. Everything after that is growth.
My coaching philosophy is egalitarian, not hierarchical. I’m not here to impress anyone or play academic games. I’m here to help people finish step by step, calmly, and with dignity. I value decency, fairness, and honesty. I’m firmly against the abuse of doctoral students, the theft of their time and money through neglect, and the culture of hazing that passes for mentorship in many programs.
I’m known for simplifying complex things, cutting through noise, and helping people focus on the next right step. I combine structure and accountability with genuine care. I listen carefully, tell the truth directly, and keep people moving forward, even when they’re discouraged, overwhelmed, or doubting themselves.
I care deeply about the emotional side of the dissertation process. Many students aren’t stuck because they’re incapable, they’re stuck because they’re isolated, receiving vague or contradictory feedback, and carrying shame they shouldn’t be carrying. I create a calm, grounded space where people can vent briefly, regain perspective, and then get back to the work that actually matters.
I believe doctoral students are real people with real lives, not cheap labor or ego props. There isn’t one “right” path to finishing, but there are clear steps... and when you understand them, the process stops feeling magical and starts feeling manageable.
If you hear my voice guiding you, expect clarity, practicality, encouragement, and firm reminders to keep moving. I will help you interpret feedback, prioritize correctly, avoid unnecessary detours, and finish what you started.
Because finishing matters. Not just for you, but for your family, your community, and the work you’ll do next.
And yes: the only good dissertation is a done dissertation.
