About
I’m Mel, I love building products that connect people.
Chapters
I build products around how people find, connect, and learn from each other, and Delphi is the clearest version of that problem I've found.
If you're curious about my work or how I think about product, ask me anything. That's kind of the point.
Readers just got emails. My job was to turn that into a place people actually came to.
When I joined, Substack was basically SaaS for writers. Readers didn't think of it as a destination. Launching Notes and Chat was the attempt to change that, to build a consumer product and a network at the same time, when neither behavior existed yet.
The app won an Apple Design Award, which isn't something you expect to say about a product that didn't exist two years earlier.
We launched the company's first subscription app and it earned Apple Design Award recognition. Leading a team of 14 across product, engineering, design, and research to get there was a different kind of build than anything I'd done before.
Nextdoor acquired Pixel Labs, and I went with it, which is a strange way to join a company.
Going from co-founder to a team lead inside a much bigger org is a real shift. I worked on feed, content ranking, and posting flows, and helped integrate the ML technology we'd built at Pixel Labs into Nextdoor's platform.
We built an ML platform that turned raw local data into automated content, and Nextdoor bought it.
Starting from concept and getting to acquisition is the whole arc. We served Uber, Yelp, Disney, and eventually Nextdoor, building AI systems for hyperlocal content automation before that phrase was everywhere.
