David Kessler presents three views of the afterlife: deceased loved ones aware of the living, deceased unaware, or no afterlife at all. Regardless which is true, he says, the living must grieve fully and then live fully.

  1. I'm David Kessler. I'm a death and grief specialist and I've been doing this for decades. Many people think there's two options for after we die, but I think there are three. Let me explain. Option number one is your loved one dies, they go to the afterlife, and they see everything that's going on with us. If that's true, I think my son would want to see me grieving fully and living fully eventually. Option two, our loved ones go to an afterlife and they don't have any awareness of what's going on here. They're busy with other things. If that's true, then all I have is to grieve fully and live fully eventually. Option 3 is the atheist view. When we die, it's over and our consciousness ends. If that's the case, when my son died, his consciousness ended and his story is no more. And if that's the reality, my story will be no more someday. So the only thing for me to do while I'm here is live fully and grieve fully. So no matter which of these it is, maybe our work is to grieve fully and eventually live fully. What do you think happens in the afterlife? Let me know your thoughts and follow for more information and support.
