David Kessler says grief is one time when being self-centered isn't selfish. Grieving people need to focus on their own pain, which is why they repeat their story, forget birthdays, or seem indifferent to others. He asks people to let them stay that way.

Chapters

  1. Grief is one of the few times in life where it's okay to make everything about you. And no, that doesn't make you selfish. We've all been raised to be so other-oriented and not good at self-care. And when something like grief comes along that really demands self-care, it can easily feel like you're being selfish. And that's the furthest thing from the truth. Grief is a time to be self-centered, self-focused, self-caring, because when you're in deep pain, it demands all of your attention. And that means you might repeat the story over and over. It might mean you're not as concerned about others or their birthdays or forgetting other things about other people. And if you know someone in grief, let them be self-focused. Join them in that focus. Have you seen this in yourself or others in grief? Let me know and follow for more.
